Steve Oomittuk, The Mayor of Point Hope.

I’ve had the opportunity to work all over the State of Alaska –– from the far Western reaches of the Aleutian Islands chain, down South along the Panhandle, and also way, way, waaaaaaaaaay up at the top of the State, as far North as a person can go in the United States.

This photo was taken almost as far North as a person can go in the United States.

This photo was taken in Point Hope, Alaska, the oldest continuously occupied settlement in North America.

Featured in this particular image is Steve Oomittuk, the mayor of Point Hope, standing along the edge of the town’s cemetery.  Behind Mayor Oomittuk, stretching for nearly a quarter mile off into the distance is the cemetery’s fenceline, made up of hundreds upon hundreds of whale rib bones.
